Aider

Dev AI · Terminal pair programmer · aider.chat

A git-aware coding assistant that lives in your terminal. You point it at a repo, it maps the codebase, proposes edits, and commits with sensible messages — using the LLM you configure.

What it is

Aider (Aider-AI) is an open-source CLI for AI pair programming. It builds a repo map, edits files in chat, and integrates with git so you can review and undo changes the usual way. It talks to hosted models (Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, and others) and can also use local OpenAI-compatible endpoints — including ones served by Ollama or LM Studio.

What it replaces

For terminal-first workflows, it replaces “paste half the file into a web chat and hope.” It is closer to a coding agent than autocomplete: multi-file edits, commit messages, and test/lint loops when you set them up. It does not replace a full IDE product (Cursor, etc.) if you want inline ghost text and a polished GUI — and it does not replace the model quality behind the API key.

License

The public repository Aider-AI/aider is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 (GitHub license metadata). Apache-2.0 is permissive: use, modify, distribute, including commercially, with attribution and patent terms as in the license text. Model and API terms are separate — your Anthropic / OpenAI / local model card still applies.

Where it falls over

  • Local models often underperform frontier APIs on large refactors; Aider cannot fix weak weights.
  • Repo maps help, but huge monorepos still blow context and cost (or crawl on local hardware).
  • Automatic commits are a feature until they aren’t — review the diff before you push.
  • Editor-native tools (Continue’s old niche, Cursor, Copilot) feel different; Aider is chat-in-terminal first.
  • API spend adds up if you leave it unsupervised on big jobs.

Who it's for

Developers who live in the terminal, want git-native AI edits under Apache-2.0, and are fine BYO-model. Not the install-and-forget path for someone who only wants ghost text in VS Code.

Related in this cluster

  • Continue — editor companion; acquired by Cursor — verify status
  • Ollama — local runner Aider can call via OpenAI-compatible API
  • whisper.cpp — local speech-to-text in the same Dev AI cluster
  • AnythingLLM — local RAG UI when the job is documents, not a repo

Verdict

Use Aider when you want a serious, open terminal coding agent with real git integration. Pair it with a strong hosted model for hard work, or a local runner for private iteration — and always read the commit before it leaves your machine.
