Tool
Coolify
An open-source control plane that deploys apps, databases, and one-click services to servers you already pay for — closer to “Heroku on my VPS” than to a container UI alone.
What it is
Coolify is a self-hostable PaaS: connect servers over SSH, deploy from Git, provision databases, issue SSL, and run Docker-compatible services from a dashboard. The official GitHub repo (coollabsio/coolify) is under Apache License 2.0. Coolify Cloud is a paid hosted control plane that still deploys to your machines.
What it replaces
It replaces a chunk of “raw Docker Compose + Nginx + certbot + bash” for people who want push-to-deploy and a service catalog without renting a proprietary PaaS. For AI side projects it can replace manually babysitting Open WebUI / DB stacks on a VPS.
It does not replace the VPS bill, observability you still have to add, or knowing what your Compose services do when they break at 2am.
License
Apache License 2.0 for the self-hosted product (GitHub license metadata). Optional Coolify Cloud is a commercial convenience layer; self-hosted remains the full open codebase under Apache-2.0 per project positioning — verify current Cloud pricing on coolify.io if that path matters.
Where it falls over
- You own the servers. Disk full, noisy neighbors, and bad SSH hygiene are still your outage.
- Abstraction piles up: when deploy magic fails, you debug Coolify and Docker.
- Solo-maintainer / fast-moving OSS risk: pin versions, back up volumes, read release notes.
- Not a full observability suite — metrics, tracing, and product analytics are usually extra.
Who it's for
Builders who want PaaS ergonomics on cheap VPS hardware and are willing to operate the box. Teams that need enterprise SLAs should look at what “community OSS + your ops” actually means.
Verdict
Use Coolify when Apache-2.0 self-hosted deploy UX beats renting Heroku/Vercel for your workload. Keep backups and a rollback story; the license is friendly, the hardware is not magic.
