Portainer

Container UI · CE + BE · portainer.io

A web UI for Docker (and more) so you are not living in docker compose for every restart, log tail, and stack edit.

What it is

Portainer is a management UI for container environments. Community Edition (CE) is the open-source build; Business Edition (BE) adds enterprise features (RBAC depth, SSO, audit, GitOps extras, etc.) and uses Portainer’s commercial licensing. Official materials describe CE as fully open source under the zlib license, with no license key.

What it replaces

It replaces a lot of day-to-day Docker CLI / compose editing for people who want a browser console: start/stop, stacks, images, volumes, basic user access. For small labs it replaces “SSH and hope.”

It does not replace learning how containers, networks, and volumes actually work — a wrong click in a pretty UI still deletes a volume. And CE is not BE; if you need the enterprise checklist, budget for BE or another tool.

License

Portainer CE is licensed under the zlib License (confirmed on the official GitHub repo). BE is commercial software with its own terms; Portainer’s own comparison notes BE can be free up to a small node count with more features, while CE stays the fully open-source, no-key path.

Where it falls over

  • UI comfort ≠ ops maturity. Bad bind mounts and privileged containers are still on you.
  • Exposing Portainer without TLS and strong auth is handing out a control plane.
  • CE feature gaps vs BE show up when you want real SSO/RBAC/audit.
  • It manages complexity; it does not remove Docker’s failure modes.

Who it's for

Homelab and small-team operators who want a Docker UI without building one. Teams with compliance checklists should compare CE vs BE honestly instead of assuming “Portainer” means one license.

Verdict

Use CE when you want an open zlib-licensed console on top of Docker. Graduate to BE (or something else) when the missing enterprise controls are real requirements, not vibes.
