Stable Diffusion WebUI
The widely known Gradio web UI for Stable Diffusion (AUTOMATIC1111): txt2img, img2img, extensions, and a settings panel that taught a generation of local image gen.
What it is
The AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui project is a Gradio-based frontend for running Stable Diffusion and a large extension ecosystem on your own machine. For years it was the default “local SD” install. Development cadence has slowed relative to its peak — verify the commit activity and your GPU stack before you standardize on it in 2026.
What it replaces
It replaces closed image SaaS for people who have a GPU and want checkpoints/LoRAs on disk. Versus ComfyUI, A1111 is more form-based and extension-centric; ComfyUI is more graph-native. Neither replaces model licenses or the ethics of what you generate.
License
The repository is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (GitHub license metadata). AGPL-3.0 applies to the WebUI code when you distribute or network-serve modified versions under its terms. Stable Diffusion and other weight files have separate licenses (e.g. CreativeML Open RAIL++, SDXL terms) — the UI license is not the model license.
Where it falls over
- Upstream momentum matters; pinned forks and alternative UIs exist for a reason.
- Extension bitrot is real after Python/PyTorch upgrades.
- VRAM and driver setup still dominate the install experience.
- AGPL obligations apply if you host a modified multi-user service.
Who it's for
Users who want the classic A1111 workflow and accept checking maintenance status. New graph-heavy pipelines often land in ComfyUI first now — compare both honestly.
Hardware that usually matters
The apps on these pages are free or free-to-use. The recurring cost is usually the machine: VRAM first, then system RAM, then disk for weights. Example Amazon listings for parts people actually buy for local inference — not endorsements; stock and price move constantly.
- ASUS Prime GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB — mid-range 16 GB VRAM card; enough for many 7B–13B quantized models and comfortable SD/Comfy workflows.
- GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 24GB — older generation, but 24 GB VRAM is still what a lot of people hunt for larger local models and heavier image pipelines.
- CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 64GB (2×32GB) — system RAM matters when layers spill off the GPU or you run CPU offload.
- Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD — model files eat disk; a fast NVMe keeps pulls and swaps from feeling stuck.

Verdict
Still a major local SD UI under AGPL-3.0 — use it if the workflow fits and the repo still meets your bar for updates. Prefer ComfyUI when you need modern node graphs. Always separate UI license from model license.
