Zed

Code editor · Optional AI · zed.dev

A high-performance, multiplayer code editor from the Atom / Tree-sitter lineage. Open-source editor first; Zed-hosted AI and edit predictions are optional paid layers on top of bring-your-own-keys.

What it is

Zed is a native code editor (macOS, Linux, Windows per current download docs) focused on speed and collaboration. AI features exist — edit predictions, hosted models, external agents / your own API keys — but the product’s own pricing FAQ states you can use it as an editor without AI, or on Personal with your own keys / external agents under stated limits.

What it replaces

It replaces VS Code / Cursor / JetBrains as a daily driver for people who want a fast native editor with built-in multiplayer. With BYO keys or external agents it can replace some proprietary AI IDE workflows without paying for Zed-hosted tokens.

It does not replace reading diffs or org policy on code leaving the machine. Hosted Zed AI is still a vendor path. Extension / language coverage will not match every VS Code niche on day one — that is a migration cost, not a slogan.

License

Per Zed’s official Software Overview and GitHub README: source is primarily GNU GPL v3.0 or later, with some reusable components (e.g. gpui) under Apache License 2.0. GitHub shows license as “Other” because of that split — the overview page is the clear map.

Cloud / binary caveat: the Zed application distributed by Zed Industries and Zed-operated services are governed by Zed’s Terms of Service. Build from source → OSS licenses for the code; use that build against Zed-hosted services → ToS still applies to those services. Pricing (Personal $0 with limits, Pro, Business) is a product overlay, not a substitute for the GPL/Apache source licenses.

Where it falls over

  • Personal plan caps accepted edit predictions; heavy AI without BYO keys pushes you toward Pro usage billing (API list + markup per current pricing page).
  • Hosted models mean code context can leave your machine — same policy problem as any cloud AI IDE.
  • Ecosystem maturity: fewer extensions than VS Code; some language tooling still feels younger.
  • GPL on most of the editor matters if you redistribute a modified binary; Apache on gpui does not make the whole app Apache.
  • Business SSO/SAML/SCIM called out as planned-not-current on pricing FAQ at draft time — verify before enterprise buy-in.

Who it's for

Developers who want an open-source-rooted native editor and optional AI (BYO or Zed-hosted). Teams that need org AI policy controls should read Business docs, not assume Personal covers compliance. If you need maximum extension surface area today, stay on VS Code lineage tools until you have tried your real stack in Zed.

Verdict

Use Zed when the editor performance and OSS licensing fit, and treat AI as an optional paid/BYO layer under current ToS and pricing. Do not confuse “open source editor” with “hosted AI is free and uncapped.”
