Goose

Dev AI · Extensible coding agent · goose-docs.ai

An open-source, extensible AI agent aimed past autocomplete: install tools, execute commands, edit files, and run tests with whatever LLM you wire in — including MCP-style extensions when you opt into that surface.

What it is

Goose lives in aaif-goose/goose (the project moved from the earlier block/goose home). It is an agent runtime for developers: you bring model credentials or a local endpoint, grant it tools, and it attempts multi-step work in a repo or environment. Think “agent that can act,” not “inline ghostwriter only.”

What it replaces

It replaces some of the “copy diffs from ChatGPT into the terminal” loop and competes with other coding agents (Aider, OpenHands, Cline, Cursor Agent) when you want Apache-2.0 software you can extend. It does not replace code review, CI, or human judgment when the agent proposes a destructive command.

License

The Goose repository is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 (GitHub license metadata and LICENSE file). Model providers you call still have their own terms and bills. Extensions and MCP servers you attach carry their own licenses — read those separately.

Where it falls over

  • Autonomy without guardrails can edit or run the wrong thing; sandbox and review matter.
  • Output quality caps at the model you chose — local 7B ≠ frontier reasoning.
  • You still need API keys or a local inference stack; Goose is the agent, not the weights.
  • Org/repo move (Block → aaif-goose): pin docs and clone URLs so bookmarks don’t rot.
  • Tool permissions and MCP plugins expand blast radius — treat them like production access.

Who it's for

Developers who want an Apache-2.0 agent they can extend and who will constrain tools, review diffs, and pay for (or host) a capable model. Wrong tool if you only wanted tab-complete inside a proprietary IDE with a vendor SLA.

Related in this cluster

  • Aider — terminal pair-programmer for git repos
  • OpenHands — coding-agent platform with separate Cloud/enterprise paths
  • Cline — open coding agent in the editor
  • Continue — editor companion; acquired by Cursor
  • Ollama — local models you can point an agent at

Verdict

Use Goose when an Apache-2.0 extensible agent beats locked-in autocomplete, and you will constrain tools, review every risky action, and own the model bill. Skip the autonomy cosplay if you cannot sandbox or read the diff.
