Comparison
LiteLLM vs Ollama
These are not substitutes. Pick LiteLLM when you need an OpenAI-compatible SDK/proxy in front of 100+ providers and local backends (keys, spend, failover). Pick Ollama when you need the actual local runner that downloads and serves weights. LiteLLM does not replace the inference box; Ollama does not replace a multi-provider gateway. CapRover is not on this site, so this pair is the comparison — Tech-Gurunomics.

Comparison
| Dimension | LiteLLM | Ollama |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Python SDK plus proxy/gateway (BerriAI/litellm). Model aliases; OpenAI-compatible endpoint; translates to Bedrock, Azure, Anthropic, OpenAI, Vertex, vLLM, and many others. | Local open-weight runner: CLI + API + desktop. ollama pull / ollama run. |
| App license (TG pages, 2026-09-11) | Per project LICENSE: content outside enterprise/ is MIT. Anything under enterprise/ uses a separate commercial license. Do not call the whole product “pure MIT” if you depend on enterprise features. | MIT on the application (runner / CLI / app). Model licenses vary. |
| Job | Single control plane for keys, spend, and failover across cloud and local backends. Not a model-weights runner by itself. | Download and serve open-weight models on your Mac/Linux/Windows box. |
| Local models | You still run Ollama / vLLM / llama.cpp (or a vendor API) behind it. You still pay provider invoices for hosted traffic. | This is the local runner. |
| What it replaces | Hand-rolled multi-provider glue and “copy the OpenAI client six times.” | Paid hosted chat for everyday work when open weights suffice; rolling your own llama.cpp/vLLM if you just want something that starts. |
| Official / repo | BerriAI/litellm (as framed on the TG LiteLLM page) | ollama.com |

Quick chooser
| Choose LiteLLM if… | Choose Ollama if… |
|---|---|
| You have many providers (cloud + local) and want one OpenAI-shaped endpoint | You want models running on this machine with a simple CLI |
| Keys, spend tracking, and failover are the pain | Pull/run/local API are the pain |
| You will keep running an inference backend anyway | You do not need a multi-cloud gateway today |
| You can live with MIT-core + separate enterprise/ terms if you touch that directory | You want MIT on the runner and an opinionated model library UX |
What each replaces (and does not)
LiteLLM replaces hand-rolled multi-provider glue. It does not replace the inference box: for local models you still run Ollama / vLLM / llama.cpp (or a vendor API), and you still pay provider invoices for hosted traffic.
Ollama replaces hosted chat for a slice of everyday work and replaces rolling a runner from scratch. It does not replace a gateway in front of twelve providers, and it does not replace a frontier API or a team inference cluster.
Common honest stack: Ollama (or vLLM) for local weights, LiteLLM in front if you also have cloud keys and want one client. That is composition, not a vs-score.
Failure modes
Shared
- Neither is a quality benchmark. We do not invent tokens/sec or eval scores.
- Network-exposed proxies and local APIs are credentials + data-path problems if you skip auth/TLS.
- Hosted traffic still bills. Local traffic still needs VRAM/RAM/disk.
LiteLLM-leaning
- If you treat LiteLLM as a model runner, you still have no weights. Configure a backend.
- Do not call the whole product pure MIT if you depend on
enterprise/features — that directory is a separate commercial license. - A gateway concentrates keys. Compromise of the proxy is compromise of many providers.
Ollama-leaning
- Ollama will not route Azure + Anthropic + Bedrock for you.
- Tool/agent glue is thinner than hosted products unless you build it.
- Model license traps: the app will still download restricted weights.
Who it's for / who it's not
| For | Not for |
|---|---|
| Teams unifying many LLM endpoints (LiteLLM) or individuals running open weights locally (Ollama) | People looking for a single “winner” that is both a GPU runner and a 100-provider proxy |
| Stacks that compose them: Ollama behind LiteLLM | Anyone who thinks a gateway removes GPU/VRAM constraints |
FAQ
Is LiteLLM a local LLM runner like Ollama?
No. Tech-Gurunomics (2026-09-11): LiteLLM is an OpenAI-compatible gateway/SDK. Ollama is the local runner. LiteLLM can point at Ollama; it does not replace it.
Is LiteLLM MIT?
Content outside enterprise/ is MIT per the project LICENSE as framed on the TG LiteLLM page. enterprise/ is a separate commercial license. Re-check the repo LICENSE.
Why not Coolify vs CapRover?
Coolify has a tool page on this site. CapRover does not (live /tools/caprover is 404 as of 2026-09-11). This comparison uses existing tools only: LiteLLM vs Ollama.
Which is faster?
Wrong question for this pair. LiteLLM adds a hop; Ollama serves weights. We do not invent a bake-off.

Verdict
Use Ollama to run local open-weight models. Use LiteLLM when you need one OpenAI-compatible control plane in front of many providers, including that local runner. Do not confuse MIT-core with enterprise/ terms. Size hardware for the runner, not the proxy. — Tech-Gurunomics, 2026-09-11.
