A terminal AI coding agent aimed at large multi-file tasks — diff sandbox, configurable autonomy, tree-sitter project maps, and a REPL (plandex / pdx). Self-hosted or local Docker with your own API keys is the path now.

What it is

Plandex (docs at docs.plandex.ai) lives in plandex-ai/plandex. It is a terminal coding agent built for large multi-file changes: a diff sandbox so you can review before apply, configurable autonomy levels, tree-sitter-based project maps, and a REPL invoked as plandex or pdx. Windows support is via WSL only — not a native Windows binary path.

Plandex Cloud is winding down as of 2025-10-03 and is not accepting new users. The supported direction is self-hosted / local Docker with bring-your-own (BYO) API keys — not a new Cloud signup.

What it replaces

It replaces some multi-file agent work you’d otherwise do in Aider, Goose, OpenHands, Kilo Code, Cline, or Continue when you want a terminal-first sandbox for large tasks. It does not replace code review, CI, or human judgment when autonomy is dialed up — and it does not replace a hosted Cloud product that is shutting the door to new accounts.

Where it falls over

  • Plandex Cloud winding down (2025-10-03) — no new Cloud users; self-host / local Docker + BYO keys.
  • Windows only via WSL — native Windows is not the supported path.
  • High autonomy without reviewing the diff sandbox can ship the wrong multi-file change.
  • Model quality and cost track the API keys you bring; local small models ≠ frontier reasoning.
  • You own Docker, secrets, and upgrades for the self-hosted path — Cloud wind-down is not “zero ops forever.”

Who it's for

Developers who want an MIT terminal agent for large multi-file tasks, will run local/Docker with BYO API keys, and will review the sandbox before apply. Wrong tool if you only wanted a new Plandex Cloud seat, native Windows without WSL, or tab-complete inside a proprietary IDE with no terminal workflow.

Verdict

Use Plandex when an MIT terminal agent with a multi-file diff sandbox beats assembling the same workflow elsewhere — and you are ready for self-hosted/local Docker with BYO API keys. Do not plan on a new Cloud account: as of 2025-10-03 that path is winding down and not accepting new users.
