Home Assistant
Open-source home automation that prioritizes local control: connect lights, sensors, voice stacks, and automations on hardware you run.
What it is
Home Assistant is a Python-based home automation platform (core at home-assistant/core). Official install paths include Home Assistant OS / Supervised / Container / Core. The point of the project, as they state it, is local control and privacy — cloud integrations exist, but they are optional hooks, not the product.
What it replaces
It replaces vendor hubs and closed apps (SmartThings-style lock-in, single-brand ecosystems) when you want one dashboard and automations across brands. It does not replace careful network segmentation, and it does not make every Zigbee/Z-Wave/Wi-Fi gadget painless — hardware compatibility is still homework.
License
Home Assistant core is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 (GitHub license metadata on home-assistant/core). Apache-2.0 is permissive with patent grants as specified in the text. Individual integrations, add-ons, and frontend pieces can carry different licenses — check what you install.
Where it falls over
- YAML and UI config both exist; complex automations still have a learning curve.
- Cloud vendor APIs break when vendors break them — local-first is a goal, not a guarantee for every brand.
- Exposing the UI to the internet without hardening is an invitation.
- Add-on sprawl turns a Pi into an unpaid second job.
Who it's for
Homeowners and tinkerers who want one local brain for the house and will maintain updates. Not a “set up once on a random IoT cloud account” product.

Verdict
Use Home Assistant when local control is the reason you are self-hosting. Budget time for integrations and updates. Keep cloud links optional and intentional.
