Jellyfin
A free software media system: stream your own movies, shows, music, and photos from a server you control — no mandatory premium tier to unlock the basics.
What it is
Jellyfin is the server backend and API for organizing and streaming a personal media library. Clients exist for browsers, TVs, phones, and living-room boxes. You point it at folders you already own; it does not rent you Netflix’s catalog.
What it replaces
It replaces Plex or Emby for many households that want a no-subscription media server and are fine with community clients instead of a polished marketplace. It does not replace licensed streaming services, and it does not legalize a library you do not have rights to. Hardware transcoding still depends on your CPU/GPU and client.
License
The jellyfin/jellyfin server repository is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (GitHub license metadata). GPL-2.0 is strong copyleft for distributed modifications of the covered work. Client apps and plugins may carry their own licenses — check each repo.
Where it falls over
- Transcoding eats CPU/GPU; underpowered NAS boxes struggle with on-the-fly converts.
- Remote access means you are running an internet-facing media app — auth and updates matter.
- Metadata scraping and some client polish lag commercial Plex in places; community pace varies.
- Live TV / DVR and niche plugins are “supported until they aren’t” — read release notes.
Who it's for
Households with a real media library and a machine that can serve it. People who prefer GPL software over a freemium media SaaS. Not a substitute for paying for content you stream from someone else’s catalog.

Verdict
Use Jellyfin when you own the files and want a GPL media server without a paywall on core features. Budget hardware for transcoding, lock down remote access, and keep your library lawful.
