Tool
Nextcloud
A self-hosted platform for files, sync, sharing, calendars, contacts, Talk, and a large app ecosystem — the “run your own Drive” shape with more than sync.
What it is
Nextcloud is a PHP-based server (see nextcloud/server) plus desktop/mobile clients and optional apps. You host it on your VPS or NAS; users get a familiar files UI, sharing links, and integrations. There is also a commercial Nextcloud GmbH offering — this page is about the open server you can self-host.
What it replaces
It replaces Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive as a suite: files, sync, sharing, and often calendar/contacts/Talk under one login. It does not replace peer-only sync without a server — that is Syncthing. Office co-edit usually means adding Collabora or OnlyOffice and accepting that ops cost.
License
The Nextcloud server repository is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (GitHub license metadata on nextcloud/server). AGPL-3.0 is strong network copyleft: if you modify the server and let users interact with it over a network, you generally must offer corresponding source under AGPL. Apps and clients can differ — check each component. Enterprise products from Nextcloud GmbH have their own commercial terms.
Where it falls over
- PHP + database + Redis + reverse proxy is real ops — “Docker and forget” still needs backups and updates.
- AGPL obligations matter if you ship a modified hosted service to customers.
- App store quality varies; every plugin is another update and attack surface.
- Heavy preview/Office stacks need RAM; a tiny VPS will feel slow.
Who it's for
Individuals and teams who want Google-Drive-shaped control on their own hardware and can maintain a web app. Overkill if all you need is folder sync between two laptops — use Syncthing.

Verdict
Use Nextcloud when you want the suite and accept AGPL + sysadmin work. Use Syncthing when you only need sync. Read AGPL before you productize a fork.
