Syncthing

Self-hosting · P2P file sync · syncthing.net

Continuous file synchronization between your own devices — no mandatory central cloud. Folders stay in sync over your LAN or the internet using a peer-to-peer protocol.

What it is

Syncthing is open-source continuous file synchronization. You install it on the machines that should share folders, exchange device IDs, and let it keep those folders aligned. There is a web UI, mobile clients, and discovery/relay helpers when NAT gets in the way — but the default story is “your devices, your files.”

What it replaces

It replaces Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive as a sync layer when you do not want a vendor holding the canonical copy. It does not replace a full collaboration suite (docs co-edit, sharing links with strangers, corporate DLP). For “files + calendar + Talk,” look at Nextcloud instead. Syncthing is sync, not Office.

License

The syncthing/syncthing repository is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (GitHub license metadata). MPL-2.0 is a weak copyleft: modifications to MPL-covered files must stay under MPL when distributed; linking with other code is generally more flexible than GPL. Read the license text for your distribution scenario.

Where it falls over

  • Conflict resolution is “both versions,” not Google Docs magic — simultaneous edits need discipline.
  • Exposing sync over the public internet without understanding device trust is how you sync malware to every laptop.
  • Relays help connectivity but are not a substitute for thinking about bandwidth and privacy of paths.
  • It is not a backup system by itself — syncing deletes can sync deletions everywhere.

Who it's for

People who want Dropbox-shaped sync without a Dropbox-shaped account — solo users, families, or small teams comfortable managing devices. Not the path if you need browser-based Office and guest sharing tomorrow morning.

Related in this cluster

  • Nextcloud — full files + apps suite if sync alone is not enough
  • Jellyfin — media server for the library you already sync
  • Home Assistant — local home automation in the same cluster
  • n8n — workflow automation when folders are not enough

Verdict

Use Syncthing when peer-to-peer folder sync is the actual job. Keep real backups separately. Reach for Nextcloud when you need the suite, not just the sync.
