Immich

Self-hosting · Photo & video library · immich.app

A self-hosted photo and video backup app with mobile clients, a web gallery, and machine-learning extras (faces, search) — Google Photos-shaped, on disks you control.

What it is

Immich (immich-app) is a high-performance self-hosted media library: upload from phones, browse timelines and albums, and optionally run local ML jobs for faces, CLIP search, and similar features. Docs and downloads live at immich.app / docs.immich.app. It is a stack (API, web, postgres, redis, ML workers) — usually Docker — not a single static binary.

What it replaces

It replaces Google Photos / iCloud Photos / Amazon Photos for households that want backup and browsing on their own hardware and are willing to operate the stack. It does not replace a tested off-site backup strategy, and it does not replace Jellyfin as a movie/TV theater UI (Immich is personal photos/videos first).

License

The immich-app/immich repository is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0). AGPL is strong copyleft: if you modify and offer Immich as a network service, source obligations apply as spelled out in the license. Mobile clients and related repos may carry their own notices — check each tree. Optional paid Immich products (FUTO / buy.immich.app) are separate from the AGPL server codebase.

Where it falls over

  • Disk fills faster than people expect — originals plus thumbnails/ML caches.
  • ML workers (faces, embeddings) want RAM/CPU time; a quiet NAS can feel busy during jobs.
  • Upgrades matter; photo libraries are painful to reconstruct from “we’ll figure it out later.”
  • Exposing Immich to the open internet without TLS, auth discipline, and backups is a data-loss / privacy incident waiting to happen.
  • AGPL is not “MIT so we can white-label a Photos SaaS for free.”

Who it's for

People leaving consumer photo clouds who will run Docker, schedule backups, and honor AGPL. Households with a real disk budget. Wrong tool if you wanted a hosted Photos clone with zero ops — or a GPL theater app for movies (see Jellyfin).

Hardware that usually matters

Immich’s recurring cost is storage and reliability, not a gaming GPU. Fast NVMe helps libraries and ML caches; capacity matters more than peak TFLOPS. Example listing — not an endorsement; stock and price move.

  • Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD — photo/video libraries and Immich caches eat disk; a fast NVMe keeps browsing and uploads from feeling stuck.

Verdict

Use Immich when you want Google Photos-shaped backup on your disks and you will own upgrades, AGPL, and capacity planning. Pair it with real off-site backups. Stars are not a substitute for a restore test.
